Humane Opossum Removal
There are numerous ways of keeping a St Louis opossum off your property. Opossums are shrewd creatures and will soon recognize that when they are being fooled. As it is illegal to kill an opossum in most states you will need to find a humane way or discarding them from your property. They are notoriously difficult to get rid of. The only way that is known to get rid of them is trapping. It is possible to trap them in a humane way and relocate them somewhere else.
What are your options
1. A one-way exclusion funnel is a cage that is fixed to the opening where the offending Missouri opossum is gaining access. It is shaped like a funnel, in that it has a narrow opening which leads to a larger area. It is typically made of steel, which makes it impossible to claw or chew through. The flaps located in the sides fasten to the side of the building. Once the opossum has entered the funnel the door will close behind them. This will either leave them trapped or unable to gain reentry. You can then close the entry point that they used.
2. High-frequency sound machines are designed to emit a high-frequency sound that will prevent animals from getting too close. The sound that it produces is too high-pitched to be heard by humans. It has been known to work but is not a permanent solution. However, if your neighbor does not have one their house might just seem more appealing.
3. Humane cages. The cage can be baited and placed in an area that the St Louis opossum is frequently spotted. Opossums are relatively easy to trap as they will easily walk into a baited cage. Once you have captured the opossum you can cover the cage in a blanket and place it in your car. You can then relocate it to a more appropriate location.
4. An opossum will often “faint” when it is frightened. This is an involuntary response known as “playing possum.” This can last anything from a few minutes to a few hours. If you are sure that the opossum will be unconscious for a while you can simply put it in a box and move it somewhere else.
5. You can contact a wildlife removal company. They will come in and set the trap for you. They will then return to collect the trap once the Missouri opossum has been caught. It will then be relocated or euthanized.
What now?
It is critical to relocate the St Louiss opossums as far away from your home as possible to prevent them from returning. As soon as you have removed the opossum and made sure that there are no babies present you need to close all entrances. It is important to make sure that the opossum cannot find its way into your home again.
You also need to make your yard as unappealing as possible. This means putting away all sources of food that may entice them to return.
